Understanding Pentecost

During the time when the Israelites had left Egypt Moses prayed very prophetically. While he was in the wilderness the Israelites complained and whined to Moses about what they were going through.

They murmured that they didn’t have enough food and that all they had to eat was some measly manna. They were getting tired of it, and Moses finally said to God that being the leader of these people was beyond his capabilities.

God helps Moses

In order to help Moses, God instructed him to choose 70 people and to bring them to the tabernacle where he would give further instructions. It was in this meeting that God took some of his spirit and proportionately spread it to the other people. This anointing helped them all to properly lead the Israelites. When this happened, all 70 began to prophesy, even those who didn’t make it to the tabernacle.

At that moment Moses spoke to Joshua and asked him if he was jealous. It was Moses’ desire that all of God’s people be given the gift of prophecy and that God would put his spirit on every single one of them. It turns out that that was a very prophetic statement that wouldn’t be truly answered until the day of Pentecost finally came.

The Holy Spirit is for all

As we read further into the Bible, we discover in the book of Joel that again God gives us a prophetic promise concerning an amazing blessing that is about to arrive. Through Joel, God prophesies that there is a time coming when he is going to pour out his spirit on all men.

What we can see from this in terms of god’s plan is that there is no respecter of persons. It doesn’t matter whether a person is rich or poor, a slave or free, or how old they are, or what color they are. God promised to pour out his spirit on all flesh. And we see the manifestation of this promise beginning on the day of Pentecost.

The Book of Acts

In the book of Acts, chapter 2, this is the beginning of the fulfillment of Moses’ amazing prophetic prayer. This is also the time when Joel’s prophecy begins to unfold. The spirit of God began to pour out on everyone.

Thanks to Jesus, God is no longer locked up behind a veil. He is living among his people and in his people. The Scriptures tell us that the Holy Spirit now lives inside of us. This is a far cry from what we read in the Old Testament.

The Good Shepherd speaks

In the Gospels, we read that Jesus said that we will know his voice and will follow no other. In Romans, we read that it is the spirit of God that determines who the sons of God are. It is God living inside us and leading us that represents that we are indeed his children.

This is an amazing privilege for every single born-again Christian. No longer do we have to go to a priest and ask them what God is saying. Now we have the ability to step into the presence of God whenever we like.

Every believer can receive the power of God’s spirit and be directed by him in every situation. Each and every one of us can hear from God himself and get direction when we have questions.

He’ll show you

The word of God promises that when we ask God will show us what we do not know. That he has given us his spirit to show us things that are to come. He is our tour guide here on earth.

Peter tells us that we are a royal priesthood set apart for the things of God. God has put his Holy Spirit inside of us, and he is there to talk with us. This is the very purpose of the day of Pentecost. This is the significance of why God poured out his spirit on his children.
